The Aga Khan Academy Maputo is seeking a Swimming Coach.

The Aga Khan Academy Maputo is a certified IB (International Baccalaureate) World School, situated on a large campus in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo. It is the third in a global network of Academies for exceptional girls and boys regardless of their socio-economic background, from Mozambique and across the globe. IB is a curriculum framework, which challenges students to develop academic rigour, independent learning, inquiry and creative problem solving skills, promoting international awareness, social responsibility, open-mindedness and the high ethical standards.

Position: Part/Full Time Swimming Coach


  • To plan and deliver lessons ensuring adherence to the scheme of work and lesson plans;
  • Ensure safe provision of all equipment and ensure it is used correctly;
  • Make sure safety standards are followed in sessions and undertake risk assessments;
  • Identify participants’ abilities and encourage them to reach their full potential;
  • Provide explanations and demonstrate swimming techniques;
  • Correct faults in swimming techniques and identify ways to improve performance;
  • To be a positive role model, creating a positive and fun environment in which to motivate and encourage children and adults to participate in swimming;
  • Work alongside the Swimming Coaches to help ensure that participants are able to swim in a safe environment;
  • Assist in Planning and implementing training programs including water and land based training schemes;
  • Contributing to an effective coaching structure, and engaging actively in continuous personal development and the development of Swimming;
  • Committed to developing young athletes in line with the Ethos and values of the Swimming program;
  • Capable of planning and delivering against identified goals.


  • Swimming Monitor Course/ swimming coaching course or equivalent Swimming training;
  • Three years of relevant experience (preferably in an educational institution);
  • Experience within the world of swimming as a coach;
  • Experience of coaching swimmers to a minimum of county championship standard and experience of working with children in a contemporary professional environment.
  • Understanding of the integration of successful sports’ performance programmes in to a school’s educational environment.
  • The ability to think logically
  • Willingness to fully participate in the life of the Academy.
  • Flexibility about working hours needed to fulfill requirements.
  • Excellent communications skills in English and Portuguese.
